A freeze on evictions has prompted hundreds of families to move on to open land in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage, which they have named “Bobani Village” after Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Mongameli Bobani.

The United Democratic Movement’s Bobani was installed in council in a coalition government with the ANC after the EFF turned on the DA last year and voted to remove the then DA mayor, Athol Trollip. Residents say they moved because they are tired of renting houses or living in overcrowded houses.

According to the municipality, about 1,000 shacks have been erected on the land since last month, when Bobani announced a freeze on evictions.
